Responsible play

Bet smart. Or don't bet.

Bestbet is a research and analytics platform operated by Tshintsha Trade (Pty) Ltd t/a Bestbet. We do not accept wagers and we do not run any form of gambling within the meaning of the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004. This page explains the rules around using the Service responsibly, the legal framework that applies in South Africa, and where to get help if gambling is starting to harm you or someone you care about.

1. The position of the Company

Tshintsha Trade (Pty) Ltd t/a Bestbet (registration number 2015/389865/07) operates the Bestbet platform. We publish betting tips, ledgers and analytics produced by independent tipsters. We do not accept stakes, we do not settle wagers, we do not hold customer funds, and we do not act as a bookmaker, betting exchange, totalisator or any other licensed gambling operator within the meaning of the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004 (the “NGA”) or any provincial gambling legislation.

Any bet placed in reliance on information published on the Service is placed by you, with your own money, with a licensed operator of your own choosing, and is at your own risk. The Company has no involvement in, and no liability for, the outcome of any such bet.

2. Statutory framework in South Africa

Gambling in South Africa is regulated by a federal framework consisting principally of the National Gambling Act and the Provincial Gambling Acts. Each of the nine provinces has its own regulator (for example, the Gauteng Gambling Board, the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, and the like). National oversight is exercised by the National Gambling Board.

The NGA prohibits unlicensed gambling activity and contains specific provisions for the protection of minors (section 11), the integrity of gambling activities, and the right of any person to apply for self-exclusion through the National Responsible Gambling Programme.

The Company is not a licensed gambling operator. It is a platform that publishes information on betting markets. Use of the Service does not, in itself, constitute participation in a gambling activity. The Company nevertheless implements the responsible-play measures set out below in good faith and in line with the spirit of the NGA.

3. Age and capacity

You must be eighteen (18) years of age or older to use the Service. Section 11 of the NGA makes it an offence for a minor (under 18) to engage in any gambling activity. By registering an account you confirm that you are at least 18.

We may, at our discretion, require you to provide proof of age and identity. If we cannot verify that you meet the age threshold, we will suspend or close your account and refund any subscription fees paid in advance for unused periods.

Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that the Service is not accessed by anyone in their care who is under the age of 18. We recommend using parental control software where children share a device.

4. Self-exclusion

South African law recognises a person's right to exclude themselves from gambling activity. Two distinct mechanisms are available to you.

4.1 Self-exclusion from your bookmaker. Every licensed bookmaker and casino in South Africa offers a self-exclusion option that locks your account with that operator for a defined period. This is the most direct way to stop placing bets. If you are concerned about your behaviour, contact your bookmaker and ask to be self-excluded.

4.2 National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP). The NRGP, administered by the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, runs a self-exclusion register. Once registered, participating gambling operators are required to decline your business. You can apply through responsiblegambling.org.za or by calling the toll-free helpline on 0800 006 008.

4.3 Self-exclusion from Bestbet. If you would like us to close your Bestbet account on the basis that you are self-excluding from gambling-related content, email info@bestbet.co.za. We will close your account, end any active subscription without further charge, and decline future attempts to register using the same identifiers for a minimum period of six (6) months.

5. Set your own limits

Even if you do not need to self-exclude, the single most effective form of harm reduction is to set your own limits before you start. We strongly encourage you to:

  • Decide a fixed monthly budget for betting, in advance, and do not exceed it under any circumstance.
  • Treat that budget as entertainment spend. Never bet money you need for rent, food, transport, debt servicing or family obligations.
  • Treat tips on the Service as input only. You make the decision; the Tipster does not.
  • Take a break of at least 72 hours if you lose three sessions in a row.
  • Do not chase a loss with a larger stake. Chasing is the single most common pathway from recreational betting to harm.
  • Do not bet while intoxicated, while emotionally distressed, or as a way to deal with stress, boredom, depression or relationship difficulty.
  • Keep records. Know what you have actually won and lost. The Bestbet ledger shows past picks, but only your own bookmaker statement shows what you have actually spent.

6. Warning signs

The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation identifies a number of warning signs of problem gambling. If any of the following apply to you or someone close to you, stop and seek help.

  • You are betting more than you intended, more often than you intended.
  • You are hiding what you bet, or how much, from family, partners, or friends.
  • You are borrowing money to bet, using credit cards, payday loans or other short-term credit you cannot comfortably repay.
  • You are missing work, school or family obligations because of betting.
  • You feel anxious, irritable or low when you cannot bet, or after a losing day.
  • You have tried to stop or cut back without success.
  • You are lying to those close to you about the extent of your betting.
  • Wins no longer feel like wins. Losses feel personal and persistent.

7. Where to get help

Help in South Africa is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day.

8. Protecting people in your life

If you are worried that a family member, partner, friend or colleague is gambling in a way that is harming them, the NRGP helpline takes calls from concerned third parties as well as from gamblers themselves. You do not have to identify the person; the conversation is confidential and free.

Practical steps you can take include opening a frank conversation without judgement, helping the person set spending limits with their bookmaker, supporting them to self-exclude, and removing easy access to credit. Avoid covering their losses or paying their gambling debts — this rarely helps in the long run.

9. How the Service supports responsible play

The design of the Service is intended to make outcomes transparent rather than to encourage repeat behaviour. In particular:

  • The Tipster ledger is append-only. Losers cannot be deleted. Past performance is visible in full before you decide whether to follow a Tipster.
  • The chat function blocks all URLs, link shorteners, IP addresses and contact-solicitation patterns. This is to make it harder for predatory operators to use the Service to reach vulnerable users.
  • We do not advertise gambling operators, we do not run affiliate links to bookmakers, and we do not pay or receive commission for sending you to any specific bookmaker.
  • We do not promise profit. The Service shows what tips actually settled to, not what someone claims.

10. Closing your account

You may close your Bestbet account at any time by emailing info@bestbet.co.za. If you ask us to close your account on responsible-play grounds we will not require an explanation. We will close the account, end any active subscription without further charge, and apply a re-registration cooling-off period as set out in clause 4.3 above.
